Founded in 1993 by Ray Mackinlay and Pauline Wilson, NASSL (National Animal Sanctuaries Support League) began as a shared vision to protect and care for animals in need. As founding trustees, Ray and Pauline worked tirelessly to grow the charity. Following the sad passing of Mr. Mackinlay in 2019, Pauline continues to lead NASSL, supported by a dedicated team of trustees and compassionate volunteers. Under their stewardship, NASSL has become a trusted and effective charity, making a real difference in the lives of animals across the region. NASSL provides care for dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits, and rodents, operating with a firm non-destruction policy. In addition to animal rescue and re-homing, the charity plays a vital role in the community, working closely with women's refuges and social services. In times of crisis, NASSL steps in to look after pets until families are able to reunite with them.
A new collaboration between NASSL and THE HOUSE OF RADHA is creating exciting opportunities for students in both Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) programmes. Through this collaboration, remote and in-person industry internship placements will be available, offering students valuable hands-on experience. These internships will support NASSL, a County Durham-based charity dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals across the region. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to the charity’s mission while gaining real-world experience in a professional setting.Internship roles will span both business-oriented functions—such as marketing, administration, and operations—and creative disciplines, including design, media, and content creation. This initiative allows students to apply their academic learning in a meaningful, impactful way while working with an experienced and passionate team.

In 2017, Dr. Clive Kelly travelled to South Sudan, to meet his colleague and 37 young South Sudanese refugees. Three years earlier, they had fled to Kenya due to civil war in their homeland. They communicated their mission to gain an education they could eventually bring back to South Sudan to share with others with limited access to schooling. Dr. Kelly committed to building a school in their district of Wau if they completed their studies in Kenya, funding their education, accommodation, and living expenses. They proved to be diligent students, and as a result, Dr. Kelly established the "Kelly Academy of Hope" (HOPE HOUSE), which opened in early 2024 with a handful of pupils. The academy has expanded to accommodate 178 children and employs 7 teachers across 6 primary school classes.
The same year, Dr. Clive Kelly visited Uganda, where a friend rescued twelve young orphans from the sewers under the city of Mbale. These children wore rags, scavenged for food, and were at risk of exploitation. Dr. Kelly agreed to assess and treat their medical issues and provided ongoing support for the children until they could become independent. Recognising the need for additional support for vulnerable children, (KELAH HOUSE) was established as a community children’s charity in Mbale. This charity aims to accommodate, clothe, feed, and educate these young boys and girls until they reach the age of sixteen. Humanitarian and academic, Dr. Clive Kelly envisions providing affordable education to equal numbers of girls and boys in these areas, enabling them to make informed choices about their lives to establish careers and create a stable home for their future and their communities.
We are honoured to announce that THE HOUSE OF RADHA will support the Kelly Academy of Hope and Kelah Community Children’s Charity to raise awareness of their impactful work, and the lives they are transforming. We will also provide learning and development experiences for the children.
